How to Read a Skincare Ingredient List

600

Ingredient lists are designed to confuse you. Here’s how to decode them in 60 seconds.

Rule 1: First Five Matter Most

Ingredients are listed by concentration, highest to lowest. The first five ingredients make up the bulk of the product. If the first five are water, silicones, and fillers, that’s what you’re buying — regardless of what the label promises.

Rule 2: The 1% Line

Anything listed after fragrance, preservatives (phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate), or thickeners (xanthan gum, carbomer) is present at less than 1%. A product may advertise an amazing ingredient, but if it’s below the 1% line, you’re getting marketing, not results.
