I spent a year replacing every synthetic product in my routine with a botanical alternative. Here’s what I’ll never go back to — and what wasn’t worth the switch.
Worth Every Penny
Rosehip oil as a nighttime moisturizer. Aloe vera gel as a daytime hydrator. Chamomile tea compresses for irritated skin. Raw honey as a weekly mask. These four botanicals outperformed their synthetic equivalents every time.
Not Worth the Switch
Natural deodorant (I tried seven brands, none worked). Natural sunscreen (mineral is fine, but DIY recipes are dangerous). Any product that promised to replace retinol (bakuchiol came closest, but still isn’t there). Some synthetics exist because they’re genuinely better.
The Real Lesson
You don’t need to go 100% botanical to benefit from plants. Adding even two or three plant-based products to an otherwise conventional routine can transform your skin. Nature and science work best together — not as enemies, but as partners.
