Exfoliation: Physical vs Chemical

Exfoliation is essential — but doing it wrong can destroy your skin barrier. Here’s how to choose between physical and chemical exfoliation.

Physical Exfoliation: Scrubs and Tools

Uses friction to manually remove dead skin cells. Can be effective but easy to overdo. Avoid walnut shell scrubs — they cause micro-tears. Gentle options: rice powder, jojoba beads, konjac sponges. Limit to once a week.

Chemical Exfoliation: Acids

AHAs (glycolic, lactic) dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells — great for dry or sun-damaged skin. BHAs (salicylic acid) penetrate pores — ideal for oily or acne-prone skin. PHAs are the gentlest option for sensitive skin. Start once a week, never daily.
